Richard Henry O'Connell

[edit] Biographical Information

Dick O'Connell was General Manager of the Boston Red Sox from 1960 to 1962, assistant GM from 1963 to 1965 and GM again from 1965 to 1977. He was named The Sporting News Executive of the Year in 1967 and 1975.

He was an intelligence officer in the United States Navy during World War II. While serving in Pearl Harbor, he met Johnny Pesky and other members of the Red Sox organizations and was encouraged to drop by the team's offices to seek a possible job after his discharge. This is exactly what he did early in 1946, and he was offered the job of business manager of the Sox's new affiliate in the New England League, the Lynn Red Sox. Thus began a long association with the team.
