Brother of Slick Coffman, Dick Coffman had a long career in the major leagues, pitching from 1927 to 1940 and coming back for 14 games in 1945. His obiturary from the Athens, AL Courier, called him "An Old Pro", and said he started in pro ball at age 17. In the minors, he played for Chattanooga, Birmingham, and Knoxville.
He hit the majors at age 20, pitching on the same team as the 39-year-old Walter Johnson. He spent most of his career with the St. Louis Browns, but at age 29 came to the New York Giants and appeared in two World Series, both against the New York Yankees. In Game 1 of the 1937 World Series, Coffman relieved in a game which Carl Hubbell started.
In 1938 with the Giants, Coffman led the league in saves and also in games finished. He had previously led the league in games finished in 1936.
