Des Moines is the state capital of Iowa, located on the Des Moines River in the center of the state. The name Des Moines means "of the Monks", in reference to the French Jesuits who first explored the area in the 17th century.
The city's Western League Park was the location of the first night baseball game under permanent lights in Organized Baseball on May 2, 1930.
