[edit] Biographical Information
". . . Derrell Griffith . . . has a short stride, quick wrists and a fine, level, left-handed swing." - from Sports Illustrated, April 19, 1965
Derrell Griffith, who did well enough in the minors that he was considered a "can't-miss youngster", played four seasons in the majors. He got his most at-bats with the 1964 Dodgers, hitting .290 in 238 at-bats but fielding .769 in 35 games at third base.
Griffith was signed as a free agent in 1962 by the Dodgers, and the next year at age 19 he was already up with the Dodgers for one game at second base (in the minors he was with Spokane in 1964). After his 1964 season, he came back in 1965-66 as an outfielder, but with fewer at-bats. The Dodgers won the pennant in 1963 and 1965-66, but Griffith did not appear in post-season play.
After 1966 he was traded to the Mets and then to the Astros, but did not come to the majors with either team.
He was with Great Falls in 1962 and Albuquerque in 1963.
He is one of three major leaguers born in Anadarko, OK, along with Cal McLish and Butch Huskey.
