[edit] Biographical Information
Derek Wallace suffered a hairline fracture of his right fibula in an automobile accident while at Pepperdine University. The injury cost him a month of pitching, but may have been the rest his arm needed, as he returned to the mound and put up a 0.71 ERA and 2-0 record to finish the season as College World Series Champions. Wallace had a 5.40 ERA for Team USA in the 1999 Pan American Games, allowing Cuba two of their five runs (one of them unearned) in the Gold Medal loss for the US. The US still clinched a spot in the 2000 Olympics. Ten years earlier, Wallace was 0 for 1 as an outfielder for the US in the 1989 World Junior Championship. He was not the only player to appear in both 1989 WJC and the 1999 Pan Am Games; so did Charlie Greene.
