Pitcher Denny Galehouse of the St. Louis Browns started the first game of the 1944 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals and earned a complete game win. The next year, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from April to October 1945. After retiring in 1950, he became a scout. Among the players he discovered and signed include Andy Benes, Frank Baumann, Joey Cora, Ken McBride, Lloyd McClendon, Matt Mieske and A.J. Sager. Galehouse died of heart disease at age 86.
