[edit] Biographical Information

Delino DeShields was a big star early in his major league career - he finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting. Thereafter, during his major league career of 13 seasons, he was usually among the league leaders in stolen bases (he had 463 total) and was usually his team's regular second baseman until late in his career when he played a lot in left field.

DeShields was signed as a 1st round pick in the 1987 amateur draft by the Montreal Expos and scout Joe Frisina. He was headed to Villanova University on a basketball scholarship when drafted, but the Expos convinced him to focus on baseball instead. His son Delino DeShields Jr. was a first-rounder 23 years later, in the 2010 amateur draft.

DeShields currently holds the record for the most major league at-bats by a player born in Delaware. He was the hitting coach for the Billings Mustangs in 2009 and managed the team in 2010.

He was nicknamed "Bop" by his teammates. He wore his socks high in tribute to the players of the Negro Leagues.
