[edit] Biographical Information
Catcher Dave Ricketts was the brother of Dick Ricketts. Both brothers appear in a 1953 scorecard for the Schoeneck Chicks of the Eastern County League -- most of the ads on the scorecard were for businesses from Ephrata, PA.
At Duquesne University, Ricketts was a leading basketball player as well as baseball player. He was a starter on the basketball team that won the NIT in 1955. He signed with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1957 but missed 1958 and 1959 due to military service. He reached the majors with St. Louis late in the 1963 season and appeared with the Cardinals in parts of five seasons as a backup to Tim McCarver. He was later traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he a portion of the year as a backup to Manny Sanguillen.
After retiring, Ricketts was a coach for the Pirates (1971-1973) and Cardinals (1974-1975, 1978-1991). He died of cancer in 2008, a day after his 73rd birthday.
