Matranga played on Team USA while attending Pepperdine University. His first major league at bat for the Houston Astros was a home run. It remains the only basehit of his major-league career. Matranga was the US second baseman in the 1995 World Junior Championship, hitting .206 with 6 runs and 6 RBI as the worst starting position player for the Gold Medal winners. He was 1 for 6 with a double as a backup 2B to Brian Oliver in the 1997 Intercontinental Cup.
