Longtime minor league manager Dave Machemer played two seasons in the majors. He also had a minor league playing career of 11 seasons.
Machemer was born in St. Joseph, MI, in southeastern Michigan on Lake Michigan. He was at Central Michigan University in 1971-72. After being drafted in the fourth round in 1972, he began his pro career with Stockton as an infielder-outfielder.
Machemer was a speedster, stealing 198 bases in his minor league career. His highest batting average was .324 with Salt Lake City in 1978.
When Dave came up to the majors in June 1978, he hit well, posting a line of .273/.333/.455 in 10 games for the 1978 Angels for whom he played several infield positions. The team batting average that season was .259.
After the 1978 season the Detroit Tigers drafted him away and he appeared in 19 games for the 1979 Tigers during the first half of the season. He played mostly second base. During the second half of 1979 he was mostly with Rochester, where he hit .292.
As a manager, Machemer has managed at 12 different locations, with the longest term being three seasons with El Paso (1988 and 1996-97).
