Dave Eggler played eleven seasons in the majors, having his best years in the National Association. In 1872 he led the league in stolen bases and runs scored. He was second in doubles.
He was playing baseball as early as 1868, with the New York Mutuals. The book When Johnny Comes Sliding Home indicates that on June 15, 1868, Eggler's Mutuals played the Cincinnati Red Stockings in front of 10,000 fans in New York. He was also on the Mutuals in 1869 and 1870.
