Darryn Smith has played for South Africa in numerous international events. In the 2000 Olympics, Smith got the start against the South Korean national team. He gave up 5 hits, 2 walks and 4 runs (3 earned) in 3 innings, taking the loss in a 13-3 defeat. During the 2001 Baseball World Cup, the right-hander was South Africa's most-used hurler. He went 0-3 with a 7.24 ERA, allowing 19 hits and 9 walks in 13 2/3 innings.
Playing outfield at times, he was 2 for 12 with 6 strikeouts, 2 walks and a homer in the 2005 Baseball World Cup; it was one of just two South African homers in the event. He allowed 7 hits and 6 runs in 4 2/3 IP and took the loss against China.
Smith faced Mexico in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. He allowed 6 hits, 3 walks and 5 runs in 2 1/3 IP before giving way to Matthew Dancer; Smith was tagged with the loss in a 10-4 defeat. Darryn pitched one game in the 2007 Baseball World Cup but it might have seemed like longer as he allowed 11 hits in just 20 plate appearances, leading to 10 runs (4 earned) in a rout.
He was back in action for the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament, allowing 10 hits, 4 walks and 5 runs in 6 1/3 innings over 3 games.
Smith was on the roster for South Africa in the 2009 World Baseball Classic but did not pitch in the WBC.
