[edit] Biographical Information

Catcher Dan Howley began in semi-pro ball and then entered the minors in 1906 with the Indianapolis Indians. He began managing at age 28 for the Montreal Royals as a player-manager.

After his playing career ended, Howley spent three seasons as a Detroit Tigers coach, three seasons as the St. Louis Browns manager, and three seasons as the skipper of the Cincinnati Reds. He also managed the Toronto Maple Leafs in the International League for several years and at the time of his death was a Boston Red Sox scout. In 1950 he was elected to the International League Hall of Fame.
