Daan Cornelissen was signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates in May 2009. Scouted by Martin Nijhoff, he signed a 7-year deal. In 2008, he had played for the farm team of DOOR Neptunus. He was expected to report to Australia in August 2009 for training.
