The team is a member of the COPABE. Cuba has been the dominant team in international competition since the 1940s. They have won 26 of the first 28 Baseball World Cups they have played in, 12 of 15 Pan American Games (including 8 in a row from 1971-2007) and 3 of 5 Olympics. Prominent national team members have included Omar Linares, Orestes Kindelan, Jose Contreras, Braudilio Vinent, Orlando Hernandez, Antonio Pacheco, Victor Mesa, Germán Mesa, Lourdes Gourriel, Pedro Luis Lazo, Yulieski Gourriel and Alfredo Despaigne.
Cuba made the finals of every major global baseball tournament from the 1952 Amateur World Series through 2008 Olympics (discounting a regional tournament, the 1959 Pan American Games), 40 straight events, before falling short of the semifinals in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
