Courtney Hawkins was a first-round pick in the 2012 amateur draft.
Hawkins weighed 270 pounds when he was only 13 years old, but was able to drop his weight to 185 pounds by high school so he could be more involved in athletics. He was one of the players at Major League Baseball's Urban Youth Academy in Houston, TX. He was 0 for 4 for the US youth national team in 2009. The US won the 2009 World Youth Championship but he sat out the finale. He hit .437/.580/.814 with 11 homers and 17 steals in 36 games as a high school senior. He was 5-2 with a 0.96 ERA as a pitcher, hitting as high as 96 mph on the radar gun. The Chicago White Sox chose him with the 13th pick of the 2012 amateur draft. He did a backflip for the folks watching on the MLB Network, demonstrating his great athleticism. He was the first high schooler the ChiSox took with their first draft pick since Kris Honel back in 2001. He soon signed with Chicago for a $2.475 million bonus and made his pro debut for the Bristol White Sox on June 21st. In the second half of a doubleheader, he started in center field and hit 3rd. He was 0 for 3 with a run in a 5-0 win over the Bluefield Blue Jays. He batted .284/.324/.480 with 8 home runs, 33 RBI and 11 stolen bases in his rookie professional season, which was split between Bristol, the Kannapolis Intimidators and Winston-Salem Dash. In 2013, he hit .178/.249/.384 with 19 home runs, 62 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 103 games for the Dash.
