Cotton Tierney played six years in the majors, finishing fifth in batting average in the National League in 1922 and second in doubles in 1923.
He also played 13 seasons in the minors.
He served in World War I, thus delaying his major league debut until 1920. After baseball, he and Zack Wheat started a bowling alley in Kansas City, MO.
He was apparently a witty man who could also sing, serving on a team singing quartet. The New Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract mentions an occasion where, after making a put-out, Charlie Grimm sang loudly to Tierney, "Have we got him, Mr. Tierney?", to which Tierney replied in song, "Absolutely, Mr. Grimm". It was apparently a take-off on a vaudeville routine.
