Cory Mazzoni is a college pitcher.
Mazzoni fanned 21 in 24 1/3 innings as a high school freshman and 44 in 48 innings as a sophomore, going 4-2 with a 3.06 ERA the latter year. He improved to 11-0, 1.17 as a junior and fanned 96 in 78 innings; he also hit .352 and was named Player of the Year by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. In 2008, he had 7-2, 1.13 record and gave up only 21 hits in 55 2/3 innings, striking out 89. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette named him All-Area. The Washington Nationals picked him in the 26th round of the 2008 amateur draft.
Mazzoni opted for college but struggled as a freshman, going 1-5 with a save and a 6.57 ERA, the second-highest ERA on the NC State staff.
