Brownsten was All-League in both baseball and soccer in high school. He hit .308 as a freshman in junior college, then improved to .390 with 50 RBI and a .615 slugging as a sophomore. He was named his conference's Defensive Player of the Year. Transferring to Pitt, Cory hit .226/.302/.398 while throwing 10 of 38 attempted base-stealers in 2009. As a senior in '10, Brownsten made major strides, batting .395 and fielding .993. He was All-Big East Conference at catcher.
