Cornelius "Con" Lucid was the only Irish-born player to make his major league debut between 1892-1900. Although many Irish-born players had preceded him, the stream was starting to run dry.
Lucid played for four major league teams in his five-year major league career.
The New York Times of April 17, 1894, says he was claimed by Troy.
The book Occasional Glory: The History of the Philadelphia Phillies relates a Fred Lieb story to the effect that Lucid, while suffering from a sore arm, was sent by the Phillies in 1897 to check out a minor leaguer named Honus Wagner but reported back that Kid Elberfeld was a better pick defensively. The book is skeptical about whether the story is true, noting that Lucid pitched for Reading, not Philadelphia in 1897.
The book Notre Dame Baseball Greats says that Lucid's obituary claimed he had gone to the University of Notre Dame but that no support for that could be found.
Bad Bill Dahlen states that Dahlen, after having a 42-game hitting streak in 1894, launched into a second hitting streak of 28 games, stopped only by Con Lucid.
