When the Columbus Mudcats moved to Zebulon, NC in 1991, it left Columbus, GA without a AA team for the first time in 27 years. The city instead joined the A South Atlantic League with the entry of the Columbus Indians. The club went 73-69, finishing fourth in the seven-team Southern Division in the first hald and 5th in the second half. Future big-leaguers on the club included 3B David Bell (.230/~.284/.314), C Kelly Stinnett (.263/~.310/.417, a team-high 14 HR), SS-2B Jason Hardtke (.290/~.378/.436, 23 SB, the team leader with 104 runs and 81 RBI) and P Alan Embree (10-8, 3.59, the team leader in wins) and Dave Mlicki (8-6, 4.20). The top stars in 1991 were batting champ and OF Kyle Washington (.343/~.432/.539), the team's lone All-Star and DH/OF Pork Chop Pough (.304/~.395/.483).
The next season the team got into the strange nickname business when they renamed the Columbus Red Stixx.
