Although Chummy Gray had only one month in the big leagues, he pitched 70 2/3 innings in that time in 9 games. Six of them were complete games, and his ERA of 3.44 was better than the league average of 3.85. Earlier in the season, he had been in the Western League, where he pitched a no-hitter.

He was on the roster of the 1900 Kansas City Blues.

In 1895, he had played on the Toronto Canucks, going 15-27.

Born in Rockland, ME, he died at age 40 in the same place. The only other major league player from Rockland, ME is Harvey Cushman, who broke into the majors three years after Gray in 1902.
