He was then traded to the Uni-President Lions for Shih-Hsih Wu.

Chen produced at a .241/.291/.270 clip and fielded .955 for the Lions in 1998, alternating between 2B and 3B. He made the All-Star Game for the first time; he would repeat as an All-Star in the next two years. In 1999, his batting line remained very steady at .241/.296/.285 and he fielded .957, now starting at 2B for the Lions. During 2000, Chen fell to .208/.250/.266. In 2001, he hit .276/.324/.343, but now was a backup infielder. He ended his career with a meek 7-for-58 in 2002.

Overall, Chen had hit .228/.270/.268 and fielded .945 in 795 CPBL games.

Chen then became a coach, with the Lions (2003-2006) and Elephants (2007 CPBL-2011). He was interim manager of the Elephants for two games in 2010, going 1-1. He was infield coach for the Taiwan national team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers, 2012 Asian Championship and 2013 World Baseball Classic.
