[edit] Biographical Information
Chick Autry, sometimes called "Martin Autry", caught six years in the major leagues as a backup catcher but never had as many as 100 at-bats in a season.
His best year with the bat was in 1928 when he hit .300. During the off-season prior to 1929 he was traded for Bibb Falk, a good regular outfielder who had had fallen off a bit with the bat in 1928.
In Cleveland he backed up Luke Sewell. In Chicago in 1929 he backed up Moe Berg.
He is one of three major leaguers (through 2007) with the last name Autry. One of the others is also called Chick Autry.
Autry managed nine years in the minors, mostly at Savannah.
As a player in the minors, his career stretched from 1923-42. He was with New Orleans from 1932-36.
