[edit] Biographical Information

Catcher Charlie Bennett lost both legs after being run over by a train in 1894. Bennett Park, first home of the Detroit Tigers, was named in his honor. Bennett threw out the ceremonial first pitch of the season for the Tigers every year through 1926.

Bennett was a good-hitting catcher who had a long career by 19th Century standards. He spent the bulk of his career with the Detroit Wolverines before and at the time that the The Big Four played for Detroit. When Jack Rowe, the famous catcher of The Big Four, came over to Detroit, Bennett stayed at catcher and Rowe moved over to shortstop.
