Biographical Information[edit]

Cha Seung Baek removed himself from a semifinal game in the Asian Junior Baseball Championship in 1998 due to pain. The Korea Baseball Association "permanently" banned him from national team involvement due to his action. A decade later, though, In-sik Kim included him on the preliminary roster submitted for the 2009 World Baseball Classic; by this point, Baek was not even a South Korean citizen anymore, having attained US citizenship. He signed with the Orix Buffaloes in Japan for 2012 but was unimpressive in the minors (2-4, 4.35) and never made it to the big club.

Baek was signed by scout Jim Colborn for the Seattle Mariners in September 1998 for $1.3 million. He made his pro debut the next summer for the AZL Mariners.
