Light-hitting Venezuelan shortstop César Gutiérrez played for the San Francisco Giants in 1967 and the Detroit Tigers from 1969 to 1972. Despite a .235 career batting average, he is best known for setting a major league record for consecutive hits in an extra-inning game. On June 21, 1970, he had six singles and a triple for the Tigers in a 9-8, 12-inning win over the Cleveland Indians.
Gutiérrez died January 22, 2005 in Venezuela of a heart attack at age 61.
