Light-hitting Venezuelan shortstop César Gutiérrez played for the San Francisco Giants in 1967 and the Detroit Tigers from 1969 to 1972. Despite a .235 career batting average, he is best known for setting a major league record for consecutive hits in an extra-inning game. On June 21, 1970, he had six singles and a triple for the Tigers in a 9-8, 12-inning win over the Cleveland Indians. He also led the 1967 Pacific Coast League with a .322 batting average; no one else hit over .300. A year later, he was 5th at .298, only .006 behind #2 Richie Scheinblum; he also tied Billy Cowan for the PCL lead with 168 hits.
Gutiérrez died January 22, 2005 in Venezuela of a heart attack at age 61.
