The brother of Jody Lansford and Phil Lansford, Carney Lansford had the most successful baseball career in his family. He was the 1981 American League batting champion and came close in 1989, finishing second in the league. He had a fifteen-year major league career, getting over 2,000 hits.

After his playing career ended, Lansford spent time on the coaching staff of Tony LaRussa with the Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals. He is now hitting coach for the San Francisco Giants.
