The current Canadian-American Association (also known as the Can-Am League) is an independent league which began play in 2005; that league had previously been known as the Northeast League. The number of teams in the league has fluctuated quite a lot during its lifespan, with the Capitales de Québec and the New Jersey Jackals being the strongest franchises. In 2012, the league reached an agreement with the American Association for interleague play between the two independent circuits.
