Biographical Information

Cadwallader "Cad" Coles was the most-frequently-used back-up on the 1914 Kansas City Packers of the 1914 Federal League. It was his only season in the majors.

Coles was born in Rock Hill, SC and attended college at Clemson University, also in South Carolina, in 1903-04. In 1907 he played for the Spartanburg team along with John McMakin, who had also attended Clemson. From 1908-11 Coles played for Augusta.

After years of playing in the South, Cad came north in 1912 to play for Binghamton and stayed up north in 1913, playing most of the season for Elmira, for whom he hit .357.

He appeared in 78 games for the 1914 Packers, the most of any back-up, although Johnny Rawlings had more plate appearances in fewer games (Rawlings, a rookie, also spent part of the season in the 1914 National League). Coles was 28 years old at that point, and was the same age as the team average age.

In 1915-16 he continued to play for northern minor league teams.
