[edit] Biographical Information
First baseman Bruce Konopka had cups of coffee with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1942 and 1943 before serving in the the U.S. Navy for two years during World War II. In 1946, he briefly played for the Athletics again.
Perhaps his most noteworthy achievement, however, came on the the football field. A punter, he was credited with a 132 yard punt in an October 23, 1937 high school game. He kicked the ball 77 yards, and it rolled and bounced another 55.
Konopka later worked for Coors Brewery, Burns Realty and DuPont Stocks and Bonds. He died at age 77 and was cremated.
