[edit] Biographical Information
Brian Bocock made his major league debut for the San Francisco Giants on Opening Day 2008 as the team's starting shortstop against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He made the team as a non-roster invitee in spring training, impressing management with his defensive ability.
Bocock had never played at a higher level than single-A at that point, and had hit only .220 for the San Jose Giants in 2007, with 19 doubles in 345 at-bats (he did hit .292 in the South Atlantic League, but in only 39 games). The previous year, his first year in organized baseball, his hitting line was a paltry .221/.300/.279 between two teams, so his ability to hit Major League pitching overall was a serious question. It was thus not a huge surprise that he hit only .143 in 32 games to head back to the minor leagues. He was back up in the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies at the tail-end of the 2010 season, going 0 for 5 in 6 games.
