Outfielder Brian Barton was drafted in the 38th round of the 2000 amateur draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers but opted for college, attending the University of Miami. As a junior in 2004, he hit .371 and was named to the College World Series All-Tournament team.

Undrafted out of college, Barton was signed by the Cleveland Indians as a free agent. After three years in the Indians organization, he was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the Rule V draft. He made his big league debut as a pinch hitter on April 1, 2008 and got his first major league hit.
