Brett Lorin made his minor league debut in 2008.

Lorin had a 1.94 ERA and a no-hitter as a senior and also was a talented basketball player (15 points and 8 rehabs per game and the league leader in blocked shots). He was a high school teammate of Tanner Scheppers. He struggled at the University of Arizona. After a medical redshirt in 2006, he had a 9.31 ERA in limited work in '07. He transferred to Cal State Long Beach and was 5-3 with a 2.61 ERA as a junior. The Seattle Mariners took him in the 5th round of the 2008 amateur draft.

Brett was 1-0 with a 2.82 ERA in his pro debut with the Everett AquaSox, fanning 29 in 22 1/3 IP and being named the team's Pitcher of the Year. Had he qualified, he would have been second in the Northwest League in ERA. He was 0-2 with a 4.82 ERA after a promotion to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, but with over a strikeout per inning.

Lorin started 2009 strong, going 5-4 with a 2.44 ERA for the Clinton Lumber Kings. He had fanned 87 in 88 2/3 innings and allowed a .192 average. He was third in the Midwest League in ERA. He was then traded with Ronny Cedeno, Jeff Clement, Aaron Pribanic and Nathan Adcock to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Ian Snell and Jack Wilson.
