Bobby Wilkins came out of Catawba College and played at a young age for the wartime Philadelphia Athletics as a backup shortstop.
He was at Catawba at the same time as Vern Benson. Benson also came to the Athletics, but played there in 1943 and 1946, while Wilkins was there in 1944 and 1945. Ray Poole, another player from Catawba, overlapped in his time there with Wilkins, and played with the Athletics in 1941 and 1947.
