Son of Major Leaguer Bobby Byrne, Bobby Byrne Jr. was a fighter pilot in Africa during World War II. He played baseball with the Cincinnati Reds farm system before the war.

Byrne hit .265 with 7 triples between three stops in 1939, reaching B ball. He made 29 errors in 53 games at third base, fielding .815 at the hot corner, and also played some outfield. In 1940, he batted .332 between three clubs, all at the D level, and playing solely outfield. In 1941, he hit .230/?/.340 for the Ashland Colonels to end his career; he fielded .925 at second base that season.
