[edit] Biographical Information

"Bobby Cargo, by his excellent fielding and timely hitting, is becoming more popular with every game." - Sporting Life of May 22, 1897 about Bobby Cargo's play with Newark

Although his major league career was extremely brief (a pair of games with the 1892 Pittsburgh Pirates), Bobby Cargo was a well-known minor-league ballplayer, who made Atlanta his professional home for several seasons. He was especially known as a slick-fielding third-baseman.

Cargo died of pneumonia in the spring of 1904, shortly after the start of the season. He had come down with a cold, which he did not regard as serious, and tried to play his way through the ailment. Complications set in, however, and Cargo succumbed to the illness.

Cargo had several brothers who also played pro baseball, including shortstop Chick Cargo.

Sporting Life of Nov. 11, 1899 gave a resume of his career since 1890, pointing out that he had played on numerous championship teams in that time.

" . . . when it comes to playing a steady, reliable every day game at short he has the rest of his competitors in the League beaten to a standstill." - Sporting Life of Sept. 10, 1898 about Bobby Cargo with Canandaigua
