[edit] Biographical Information
Brother of Roy Johnson, Indian Bob Johnson was a top player of the 1930's and 1940's. His Adjusted OPS+ is 138, ranking # 83 of all-time, and he had 161 points on the Gray Ink test (the average Hall of Famer has 144).
Bob was called "Indian Bob" because he was part Cherokee. He played semi-pro ball, and when his brother Roy signed with the pros, Bob felt he was just as talented. Bob failed in several tryouts, however, not starting in pro ball until 1929 with Wichita. In 1931-32, he became a high-average power hitter in the minors.
Johnson finally came to the majors as a regular in 1933 when the Philadelphia Athletics sold Al Simmons. Starting at age 27, Bob would play 13 seasons in the majors, always getting at least 117 games and 438 at-bats in any season. His Adjusted OPS+ was always at least 125.
Defensively, he had a good arm and racked up lots of assists.
After his major league days he played in the minors again, with his last season in 1951 in Tijuana.
