Bob Detherage had top stats for his days in the major leagues, with a lifetime .308 average and a .500 slugging percentage. However, he had only 20 games in the majors. He played for the pennant-winning 1980 Kansas City Royals in April and May of 1980. Clint Hurdle was coming back from injuries in 1979, and that made it hard for Detherage to keep a job in an outfield that also featured Willie Wilson and Amos Otis.
Detherage had been in the minors from 1973-80 in the organizations of the Los Angeles Dodgers, St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros, and Kansas City Royals. He was named MVP of the 1973 Pioneer League when he led the league with 85 hits, 7 triples, and 55 RBI for the Ogden Dodgers.
