Bob Ayrault was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 26th Round (657th overall) of the 1987 amateur draft but did not sign. He began his professional career with the unaffiliated Reno Silver Sox of the California League in 1989, from whom the Philadelphia Phillies purchased his contract in mid-season.
