Vaughan Pallmore Devine

Bing Devine got his start in baseball with the St. Louis Cardinals while in college helping to compile statistics. Devine lettered in both baseball and basketball in college. In 1939 he became an assistant in the Cardinals public relations office. Devine then started working as business manager in the farm system with the Johnson City Cardinals (1941), Fresno Cardinals (1942), and Decatur Commodores (1942). Devine served a hitch with the Navy Fleet Air Wing during WWII (1943-1945). Returning to the farm system, he was business manager for the Columbus Cardinals in 1946 and 1947. Devine was an assistant to Fred Saigh in St. Louis in 1948, then was the General Manager of the Rochester Red Wings from 1949 to 1955. He was the Assistant GM of the big league Cardinals in 1956 under Frank Lane. He was then General Manager of the St. Louis Cardinals from 1957 to 1964. After spending 1965-1967 as the New York Mets GM, he returned to the Cardinals in 1967 and remained their General Manager until he was fired in 1978.

From 1981 to 1986, Devine was president of the other St. Louis Cardinals, of the NFL.

Devine spent the last years of his life as a special assignment scout for the Philadelphia Phillies (1989-199?) and St. Louis Cardinals (199?-).
