Bill Phillips is remembered for managing the 1914 Indianapolis Hoosiers to the Federal League pennant. His top hitter was Benny Kauff, and his top pitcher was Cy Falkenberg. He also managed the 1915 Newark Peppers in the Federal League.
As a player, Phillips pitched for seven seasons in the majors. He came up in 1890 for 10 games, then came back in 1895 for 18 more games, before finally sticking from 1899-1903 with the Cincinnati Reds. In 1899 he went 17-9 on a team that featured Wahoo Sam Crawford as a 19-year-old rookie, and which was managed by Buck Ewing.
