Bill Lewis posted impressive hitting numbers for a National League catcher, hitting .327 with an on-base percentage of .414, although he showed little power.
He broke in with the 1933 St. Louis Cardinals, making him briefly a member of the Gas House Gang. In spite of hitting .400, he didn't appear with them in 1934. In 1935 he was with Montreal and with the 1935 Boston Braves, coming back with Boston in 1936.
His minor league career ran from 1924-45. He was primarily an infielder for the first half of his professional career and then became a catcher.
Lewis was nicknamed "Buddy", thus leading to possible confusion with Buddy Lewis, a player who broke in in 1935.
Scouted for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1946 to 1972 and the New York Mets from 1973 to 1977.
