Bill Howe was an All-American outfielder in 1947 alongside Jackie Jensen. He previously had been a first lieutenant during World War II, having served in the Air Force. He ran Howe's Racquet Shop in Providence, RI, never playing baseball professionally. He did appear in the first College World Series along with his long time friend, George H.W. Bush.
