Biographical Information[edit]

Bill Hawes showed you could play professional baseball in the 19th Century without spending much time at the major league level. He spent nearly 20 years as a professional, from 1876 to 1893. He was an amateur player in 1874-75.

In both 1880 and 1881, he umpired one National League game, then in 1882, he worked 16 games.

After baseball he ran a tavern and owned a pawn shop.

"The veteran Billy Hawes is now captaining the Lowells and is handling his men well. He leads the New England League in base-running." - Sporting Life, July 9, 1892
". . . one of the crack first basemen of his day . . ." - Sporting Life, Sept. 1, 1900
