Right-hander Bill Ayers spent thirteen active seasons in professional baseball from 1937 to 1954.
He pitched his first game in the major leagues on April 17, 1947 and his last on July 13, 1947 for the New York Giants. He finished with an 0-3 record in 13 games.
Ayers had a long minor league career interrupted by the war. He went 19-9 in 1942, 15-8 in 1943, and then was away from 1944-45. In 1946 he came back to win 21 games. Later, in 1951, he won 20 again.
He served in Europe in 1944 and 1945 for the U S Army during World War II.
After baseball Ayers was a route mail clerk for the U S Postal Service. He died from a heart attack while golfing on September 24, 1980 in Newnan, GA.
He was inducted posthumously into the Coweta County (GA) Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.
