Bill Abernathie was a pitcher in the American Association. In 1952 he played with the Indianapolis Indians, picking up 11 wins for the Indians against 9 losses in 34 games and 164 innings. He had 7 complete games while starting 21 games for manager Gene Desautels. He allowed 182 hits and 62 walks, while striking out 51 with a 5.27 ERA for the sixth-place Indians who ended the season with a 75-79 record.

In 1957, Abernathie appeared in 45 games for the pennant-winning Seals, compiling a 13-2 record for a league leading winning percentage of .867.

He died on February 19, 2006 in Yucaipa, CA and is buried at the Montecito Cemetery in Loma Linda, CA, according to a SABR publication.
