Bereavement list

The bereavement list was created in 2007 to allow major league teams to replace players who must absent themselves for a few days because of a death or serious illness in their family. Placement on the list can last from three to seven games, depending on personal circumstances, and the number of days need not be set in advance. It is thus more flexible than the disabled list. Teams may recall a player from the minor leagues to replace the player who has been placed on the list.
