The cousin of Andy Sheets, Ben Sheets won an Olympic gold medal for the United States in the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
In 2008, Sheets became the all-time Milwaukee Brewers strikeout leader, surpassing Teddy Higuera. He became a free agent after the season, but missed all of 2009 because of an arm injury. The Oakland Athletics signed him for 2010, but once again, his season was cut short by arm woes.
