Pitcher Ben Howard survived the accident which cost teammate Mike Darr and another passenger their lives in spring training of 2002. Contrary to the two victims, Howard was wearing his seatbelt and suffered only minor injuries. A minor leaguer in the San Diego Padres organization at the time, Howard made his major league debut only a few weeks after the tragic accident.
